Swimming in Collias — the Gardon river
Better than a pool: the river, 5 minutes' walk away
Looking for a B&B with a pool in Collias? Our house doesn't have one — by choice. Five minutes' walk from the door, the Gardon river awaits: natural swimming in crystal water, pebble beaches, deep cool pools, and one of the most beautiful gorges in Occitanie. This guide tells you where, when and how to enjoy it.
How to get there from the village
- From Les Chambres d'Élise, allow 5 minutes on foot through the village lanes (signposted to the mairie square, then towards the bridge).
- Free parking at the village entrance, or on foot from the house (recommended in high season).
- The old bridge marks the access to the beaches: turn right after the bridge for family beaches, or continue on the left bank for wilder spots.

Where exactly to swim
Three distinct spots depending on what you want — all walkable from the village.
Bridge beach — family-friendly
Shallow water, easy access, perfect for kids. Busy in July-August.
Deep pools
Walk 200 m upstream: cool water, 2-4 m deep, ideal for proper swimming.
The Hermitage — wild
30-min walk upstream. Calm water, cliffs, few people. View on the Hermitage chapel.
When to come: temperature and crowds
May – June
Cool water (18-20°C), low crowds, great for hikers.
July – August
Water at 22-24°C, busy beaches, perfect for families.
September
Our favourite season: still warm water, golden light, quiet.
Off-season
Too cold for swimming but beautiful for hiking.
Practical tips and safety
- Water shoes recommended: pebbles can be slippery and the bottom is sometimes rocky.
- Sunscreen essential — little shade on the beaches.
- Water is unchlorinated but regularly tested by the Water Agency (quality rated 'excellent' in Collias since 2018).
- Avoid stormy days: the Gardon can flood quickly (check Vigicrues).
- No lifeguards on duty: watch your kids, don't dive blind.
