Artisanal Oil Macerates in Collias

St. John's wort, Italian helichrysum, calendula — made by Béatrice in the Gard garrigue

Béatrice, maker of the oil macerates at Les Chambres d'Élise in Collias

Certified in aromatic and medicinal plants (BPREA), I make three oil macerates using plants harvested in the garrigue around Collias. Each maceration is done in the sun, in a quality vegetable oil, over several weeks — following traditional methods, without shortcuts.

St. John's Wort

Hypericum perforatum

Harvested in the garrigue at summer solstice, when its yellow flowers are most concentrated in active principles. Solar maceration in vegetable oil, which takes on a characteristic deep red hue. Traditionally used to soothe minor burns and muscle tension.

Italian Helichrysum

Helichrysum italicum — known as 'immortelle'

A Mediterranean plant with small yellow flowers and a distinctive curry-like aroma. It grows naturally in the Gard garrigue. Its macerate is traditionally valued for its restorative qualities on bruises and minor injuries.

Calendula

Calendula officinalis — pot marigold

Bright orange flowers grown in the garden and nearby plots, hand-picked. The macerate is appreciated for soothing sensitive skin and minor skin irritations.

My method

I harvest each plant at the right moment of its season, then let it dry lightly before macerating it in a vegetable oil in the sun. Maceration typically lasts 3 to 6 weeks. No industrial process: just the plant, the oil, the sun, and time.
